He spent all of his life in Kingston and composed poetry and essays primarily about nature, God, and the spirit. The following poem is included in a collection of his works,\u00a0<em>Poems and Letters<\/em>, compiled by his sister after he died.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Childhood Hours<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, give me back my childhood hours,<br \/>\nWhen I was young, and free<br \/>\nTo roam among the woodland bowers,<br \/>\nBy mountain side and lea!<br \/>\nTo chase beneath the noonday sun<br \/>\nThe golden butterfly;<br \/>\nAnd sail my boat upon the tide,<br \/>\nBeneath the sunset sky.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, give me back my mountain hours,<br \/>\nWhen not a care I knew;<br \/>\nWith heart as gay as summer flowers,<br \/>\nAnd light as evening dew!<br \/>\nTo trace along the hidden path,<br \/>\nThat winds by rock and stream;<br \/>\nAnd pluck the daisy from its bed,<br \/>\nAmong the mossy green!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, give me back my childhood hours,<br \/>\nMy schoolmates young and gay;<br \/>\nTo roam again in quest of flowers,<br \/>\nThe pleasant fields of May!<br \/>\nAnd then at noon to sit and chat,<br \/>\nBeneath the greenwood tree;<br \/>\nAnd eat our bread and butter there,<br \/>\nAnd call it &#8220;taking tea!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, give me back my childhood hours,<br \/>\nThe dearest to my heart;<br \/>\nWhen I could sit in Nature&#8217;s bowers<br \/>\nAnd see the day depart.<br \/>\nWhen I could view the Queen of Night<br \/>\nIn lovely beauty dressed,<br \/>\nCasting her silver rays of light,<br \/>\nTo make the earth look blest!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, give me back my childhood hours,<br \/>\nWhere memory loves to dwell\u2014<br \/>\nToo dear they are to be forgot,<br \/>\nI ever loved them well;<br \/>\nBut childhood hours, and halcyon scenes,<br \/>\nWill ne&#8217;er return again;<br \/>\nAnd I must learn to leave my boyhood dreams,<br \/>\nAnd live like other men!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Cousin Benja.\u00a0<\/em>Poems and Letters<em>.
