{"id":54,"date":"2008-09-04T21:47:19","date_gmt":"2008-09-04T21:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/piqueoftheweek.wordpress.com\/?p=54"},"modified":"2008-09-04T21:47:19","modified_gmt":"2008-09-04T21:47:19","slug":"more-on-old-home-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kplma.org\/pique\/2008\/09\/04\/more-on-old-home-week\/","title":{"rendered":"More on Old Home Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kplma.org\/pique\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/ohdayprogram.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/www.kplma.org\/pique\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/ohdayprogram.jpg\" width=\"373\" height=\"821\" \/>The Massachusetts Legislature of 1902 passed an act to establish Old Home Week beginning on the last Sunday in July.\u00a0 Events could be financed by an appropriation made by Town Meeting, and in 1903, Kingston voted $100 towards the celebration.\u00a0 A committee was chosen and the week\u2019s activities planned.\u00a0 Guests were invited and local papers \u2014 the <em>Old Colony Memorial<\/em> and the <em>Free Press<\/em> \u2014 advertised the events.\u00a0 In response, letters came in from 11 states and delegates from 200 different towns attended.<\/p>\n<p>There was a children\u2019s parade on Monday, with cake and ice cream following, then a May Pole dance for the more than 400 children in attendance (Kingston\u2019s population totalled around 1900). On Tuesday, several Odd Fellows Lodges enjoyed a ball game with a banquet following.\u00a0 Wednesday was set aside for general exercises at the Town House, which was decorated with portraits of notable from earlier generations.\u00a0 Dinner was served to about 500 people and speeches followed.\u00a0 Thursday featured a clambake at Rocky Nook with games and competitions for entertainment.\u00a0 The celebration closed on Friday with an Old Home Week Dance featuring George H.
