{"id":112,"date":"2008-10-09T18:51:46","date_gmt":"2008-10-09T18:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/piqueoftheweek.wordpress.com\/?p=112"},"modified":"2022-01-03T22:39:34","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T22:39:34","slug":"railroadbridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kplma.org\/pique\/2008\/10\/09\/railroadbridge\/","title":{"rendered":"The Railroad Bridge over Howland&#8217;s Lane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Railroad Bridge over Howland&#8217;s Lane <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mr. Isaac Hedges, shown in this snapshot and identified on the back by Emily Drew, was one of the incorporators and later one of the directors of the Old Colony Railroad, as reported in the Nov. 7, 1919 issue of the <em>Old Colony Memorial<\/em>.\u00a0 This particular photograph is undated, but it was likely taken in the 1870&#8217;s, or perhaps even earlier.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kingstonpubliclibrary.org:2006\/u?\/IC7,44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Isaac Hedge at the Howlands Lane railroad bridge, no date.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kplma.org\/pique\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/pla-00-0180-lhr.jpg\" alt=\"Isaac Hedge at the Howlands Lane railroad bridge, no date.\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Isaac Hedge at the Howland&#8217;s Lane railroad bridge, no date.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The first run on the Boston-Plymouth line was Nov. 10, 1845; there would be two runs that day. By 1849, there were 15 locomotives, 4 baggage cars, 158 freight cars and 4 snowplows busy along the South Shore. The line has been running since, with only a few years of disuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We don&#8217;t know when the Howland&#8217;s Lane bridge over the tracks was built, but in 1998, the <em>Patriot-Ledger<\/em> reported it standing for at least 60 years.\u00a0 In 1999, it was to be rebuilt &#8212; made higher to accomodate the double-decker passenger cars on the current commuter service &#8212; but area residents thought this would make the neighborhood unmanageable and the project was not done.\u00a0 In 2008, however, the wooden planks that will be repaired.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s another early but still undated view of an unpaved Howland&#8217;s Lane, looking towards Main Street.
